Abstract

Merapi disasters often occur and cause loss of life, objects, and psychology for the people of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. If the community does not have resilience in the face of disasters, the risk is certainly higher. This paper explains about the worldview that triggers resilience in the face of the Merapi disaster. The study was conducted using qualitative ethnographic methods in the Turgo and Kaliurang communities. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews with 12 informants, and strengthened by observation participation. Research has found three worldviews about Merapi: as an elder, an element of power, and source of sustenance, has sparked strengthening social interaction and livelihood systems for the purpose of preparedness in pre, during and post disaster. Resilience based on the worldview translates to the practice of meeting needs and reducing risk. This capacity can be developed as a community-based disaster risk reduction mechanism.
